英语单词accost在中文中常被翻译为“搭讪”，这是一种很不合适的译法，基本上没有体现accost一词的内在含义。准确地说，accost指的是靠近陌生人，以一种粗鲁、挑衅的方式搭话，如妓女勾引嫖客，乞丐讨钱。为什么？这是因为accost原本是个军事用语，表示战舰逼近敌人的海岸线。它源自拉丁语accostare，由ad（趋近）+costa（肋骨，旁边）构成，而英语单词coast（海岸线）正是源自costa。在一些英语新闻报道中，我们依然能看到accost的初始含义，如The PCG ship was attempting to accost the Guang Ta Hsin28and two other Taiwanese vessels.（菲律宾海岸警卫队舰艇正试图逼近广大兴28号及其他两艘台湾渔船。）
