英语单词ballad（民谣）来自法语ballade，原本指的是跳舞时伴奏的歌曲，其中的ball就是“舞蹈”的意思。在中世纪时，跳舞时所播放的歌曲一般是讲各种英雄传说故事的叙事诗歌，也就是民谣，因此ballad就被翻译成民谣，实际上它的字面意思应该是“舞曲”。在中世纪，这种适合跳舞的音乐属于世俗流行音乐，对其相对的是诸如宗教音乐一类的严肃音乐。因此，ballad还含有“流行叙事歌曲”的含义。
