英语单词escalator（电动扶梯）原本是美国著名的奥蒂斯电梯公司（Otis Elevator Co.）所生产的电动扶梯的品牌名。该品牌由单词escalade+elevator组成而成。英语单词escalade原本是一个军事术语，指的是在攻城战中用梯子攀爬城墙，由e+scale（攀爬）+ade（名词后缀）构成。电动扶梯就是电力驱动的楼梯，在停用时可以作为普通楼梯使用，在很多建筑中得到普遍使用。奥蒂斯电梯公司出品的escalator牌电动扶梯在市场中占据了巨大的份额，以至于这一品牌名成了“电动扶梯”的代名词，并反向衍生了单词escalate。
