古罗马人每年8月17日举行活动向港湾之神Portunus献祭。Portunus这一神名源于意为port（港）的拉丁文portus。英语opportune一词的来源也多少与此有关联。它源于拉丁语opportunus。古罗马水手把这作为一个航海用语，表示风朝港湾方向刮（blowing towards the port），意即“风向有利的”。假若风朝相反方向刮（blowing away from the port），他们就说inopportunus，意思是“风向不利的”。航船能够平安抵达目的港，他们认为那是因为opportunus，是因为港湾之神赐福的缘故。opportune一词最初也指“（风向）有利的”，以后引申为“合适的”、“合时宜的”，它的反义词inopportune则是“不合适的”，“不合时宜的”。另一英语单词opportunity（机会）也出于同一词源。
