solve, clear up
这两者共同的意思是“解决”。它们的区别是：
1.clear up指对疑难问题等说清楚、讲明白,使人明白其中的原因; solve指对疑难问题等的解决,并不含有使人明白其中的原因。例如:
Let's try to clear up our difficult and doubtful points.让我们设法把难点和疑点解决一下。
John solved a crossword puzzle.约翰解开了纵横填字谜。
2.clear up是个通俗用词,无语体之分; solve是个较为正式的用词。
3.在求解方程式、交通、能源诸问题时,应当用solve,而不用clear up。例如:
He helped me solve a mathematical equation.他帮我解出了一道数学方程式。
solve, decipher, resolve, unfold, unravel
这组词都可指“解释模糊、神秘或不可理解的事物”。它们的区别是：
solve指为一定难度的问题寻求满意的答复或解法; resolve通常指对问题或情况的各方面进行周密的分析或思索,以便得出结论或解法,但不暗示寻找答案; unfold专指逐步展开或阐明,直至结论或彻底的解决方法变得明朗; unravel强调努力、耐心地把错综复杂的事物加以整理或澄清; decipher特指译解密码,也指解释神秘、难以理解或不可思议的事物。
solve, settle
这两个词共同的意思是“解决问题〔纷争〕”。当宾语是argument, dispute, affair, matter等名词时多使用settle; 当宾语是equation, problem, puzzle等名词时,多使用solve。
