古人认为，人的性格及命运与出生时的星象息息相关。那么，如何描述星象呢？zodiac（十二宫图）就是一个描述星象的常用工具。古代人将地球作为不动的观测原点，太阳围绕地球在天空中自西往东运行，一年为一个周期。人们将太阳的运行轨迹称为“黄道”，将黄道划分为等长的十二份，每一份称为一宫，合成为“黄道十二宫”。在每一个宫附近，差不多正好分布有一个星座，包括白羊座、金牛座、双子座、巨蟹座、狮子座、处女座、天秤座、天蝎座、射手座（人马座）、摩羯座、水瓶座和双鱼座。每个人出生时，太阳所处的宫位或星座就是你的“太阳星座”，而月亮所处的宫位或星座就是你的“月亮星座”，从东方地平线上升起的第一个星座就是你的“上升星座”。星相学认为，这三大星座都与人的性格及命运息息相关。
