爱尔兰的英文名Ireland及其民族名称Irish(爱尔兰人)均源自古爱尔兰语Eriu(爱尔）。Eriu(爱尔）含有“富有、富饶、肥沃”之意，在古爱尔兰神话中，它是一位女神的名字。据说，当爱尔兰人祖先最初登上爱尔兰岛时，有三位女神前来迎接他们，将这个岛屿的监护权赋予他们。这三位女神中，其中一位就是Eriu(爱尔女神），她是三位女神中最年长的，掌管生育和丰产，也是爱尔兰神话中的主神，是爱尔兰岛的化身。
