一提起“马路”，很多人都会自然而然地想到，马路不就是“马走的路”或“马车走的路”吗？这是一个非常普遍的错误。其实，“马路”跟“马”或“马车”都没有关系，而是“马卡丹路”（macadam road）的简称。“马卡丹路”（macadam road）一词源自现代道路建筑之父、碎石筑路法的发明者、苏格兰的建筑工程师马卡丹（John Loudon McAdam）的姓氏。=在工业革命之前，欧洲的道路要么是简易的土路，要么是用大块石头铺成的石头路。18世纪末，英国正处于工业革命的热潮之中，工业的发展对交通运输的要求愈来愈高，现有的道路再也不能适应人们的需要了。在这种背景下，马卡丹潜心钻研，于1816年发明了一种新型的筑路法。他不使用大块岩石作为道路的基础，而是使用三种不同大小的碎石，分层铺设并压实嵌入至泥土中。这种筑路法仅仅需要碎石和泥土等材料，造价低廉，铺出的路面坚实而平整，因此很快得到了广泛应用。为了纪念他，采用这种方法建筑的道路就被称为macadam road，简称macadam。=19世纪末欧美列强在华兴建租界，把西方的碎石筑路法带到了中国，在中国修筑了一些macadam road。当时中国人将这种道路音译为“马卡丹路”，简称“马路”。=柏油马路是马卡丹路的升级，是在马卡丹路面上加入柏油（tar）。这种道路在英语中被称为tarmac，由tar（柏油）+macadam组成而成。由于柏油对人体健康有害，现在人们已经普遍使用沥青（pitch）代替了柏油。
